With this release harmonia mundi launches a new series of recordings featuring the complete works for keyboard by François Couperin. On volume one, Bertrand Cuiller paints a portrait of Couperin as a mysterious alchemist. The Ordres chosen here play with the color of sounds, alliterations, double meanings and parodies, freely inspired by the world of the theatre.

Cuiller’s approach is robust and rollicking, appropriately dramatic and alert to Couperin’s occasional taste for spectacle. But it isn’t just the vigour of Cuiller’s interpretations that delights. In the third act he uses registration to create an appealing and menacing sense of contrast. And yet, it is in those pieces when we think we have the pure Couperin, sentimental, delicate, nuanced and introspective, that Cuiller really finds his voice.
