The very influential calypso first spread throughout the Caribbean and was further popularized by Harry Belafonte. But before it reached the whole world, it formed the popular music of Trinidad & Tobago. Its Golden Age revealed dancing songs that were remarkably well-written, and also artists of international class such as Lord Kitchener or Mighty Sparrow. These champions of authentic calypso created a refined, urban sound that was more basic than the foreign calypso hits it inspired.
