Hyperion's survey of the romantic piano concerto continues with one its better exponents, the aristocratic German, Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847). Mendelssohn was a fabulous pianist, noted for the exquisite finish of his technique as much as his tasteful musicianship. He premiered these concertos and performed them widely, winning ovations all over Europe. The various rondos and capriccios were similarly vehicles for the display of Mendelssohn's glittering passagework.
Pianist Stephen Hough delivers the goods: the opening of the First Concerto generates sparks almost immediately, as he sounds a challenge with the tremendous snap he applies to the theme. The excitement is palpable and it carries over to the orchestra as well. The Birmingham forces are superb, and, as usual, the Hyperion production leaves little to the imagination as to how the instruments sound. Lawrence Foster presides over the wonderful music-making, and should take some credit for not attempting to impose his own personality on scores that virtually play themselves.
Hough's previous work in this series won him a Gramophone award. The Mendelssohn recording here has the same award-winning quality--it is that good.
REVIEWS:
