SCHUMANN. THE HEART OF THE POE

Among other non-native German speaking baritones, the Danish Bo Skovhus offers one of the best enunciated, best sung, best recorded versions [of Liederkreis, Op. 24]. He is alert to the 'double vision' of the cycle, with vocal and emotional confidence, bravado even, eloquently setting into relief the half-voice of the third song and a tender legato moulded like moist clay. Helmut Deutsch, who conveys the truest sense of imminent madness in the penultimate stanza of the fifth, is a huge asset to this performance.
