Ferdinand Ries’ works for piano and orchestra stand alongside those of Hummel as the finest and most important of their kind from the early decades of the 19th century. Ries was long remembered as Beethoven’s friend, pupil, and secretary, but these recordings reveal the intense lyricism and rugged Beethovenian grandeur of this pianist-composer’s piano concertos. A rich variety of companion pieces renowned for their brilliant juxtapositions of ravishing beauty and exceptional pianistic virtuosity are also included.

REVIEW:

The Austrian Christopher Hinterhuber has made it his goal to put the great pianist Ferdinand Ries in perspective as a composer as well. He certainly succeeds in this with the complete recording of the piano concertos.

His playing of the Piano Concerto op. 132 is very well balanced in phrasing, and his touch resilts in a fine, clear piano tone. He refrains from any power on the keys, relying instead on soulful singing out.

In the variations on Rule Britannia, the RLPO does not allow itself to be seduced into musical patriotism, into pompous sounds of the kind composed by Elgar and his contemporaries.

In the Concertos op. 42 in E-flat major, op. 177, as well as the Rondeau Brillant op. 144., Hinterhuber's gripping manner once again proves himself a very competent advocate of the Beethoven admirer who, however, developed a very personal sound in his works. He plays brilliantly, with palatable forte or velvety touch in the quiet passages. In these performances, the ‘New Zealand Symphony Orchestra’ and Uwe Grodd offer marvelous support.
