Samba - Popular Music of Brasil. The samba, which emerged in the early twentieth century in Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, and Bahia, is primarily dance-oriented music. Since that time, all the major lyricists and composers of Brazilian music have played and sung sambas. This genre can be subdivised in many distinct groups, one of them being “Samba Enredo” which is the music accompanying annually the samba school carnival parades. Each school has a percussion section composed of hundreds of players. This episode is devoted to showing the various trends of this music and to include interviews with composers and the filming of live performances of certain artists who are representative of each style (Baden Powell, Roberto Menescal, Carlos Lyria, Zeca Pagodinho, etc., as the young generation). The samba schools of Mangueira, Salgueiro, etc., have given us their assistance (which is a rare privilege) for the superb 1997 Rio Carnival.
