Deben Bhattacharya (1921–2001), ethnomusicologist, record producer, filmmaker and much else besides, for decades traveled across Europe, Asia and North Africa documenting through field recordings the indigenous music of locals. Made in 1954 and 1973, this compilation features the songs, dances and spiritual rituals of the Santal people, the earliest inhabitants of northeastern India. Extensive information about the rites, instruments and each of the songs in both English and German is included.
