This album is the fourth CD in this series chronicling the complete works of David Matthews (b. 1943).; This disc includes Matthews’ String Quartet No. 11, variations on the eighth of Beethoven’s Bagatelles, Matthews’ own donation to the ‘Diabelli’ Variations, as well as his complete transcriptions of Beethoven.; Robert Reilly, an American music critic, described the music on the first disc of this series as ‘some of the most concentrated, penetrating writing for this medium in the past 30 years or more. It is musical thinking of the highest order and quartet writing in the great tradition of Beethoven, Bartok, Britten, and Tippett.; The pieces are performed by the Kreutzer Quartet.
