Georges Brassens is an eternally debonair figure of French song; if he were a monument he would belong to the National Heritage. The work of this poet born in Sete is unique — Brassens had no equivalent — and it seems to cross time without the slightest erosion of his imprint. Discreet and conscientious, the onstage personality of Brassens, at first hearing, seems very close to Brassens on record… And yet, here and there, you can sense the tiny crack or hesitation, or the sudden burst of song, which are the prerogative of a “live” recording and which reveal the humanity of his character.
