The revival of The King and I at the Music Theatre of Lincoln Center on July 6, 1964 was a big affair. The show was presented by one of its creators, Richard Rodgers, and it had in its leads two audience favorites, Risë Stevens as Anna Leonowens and Darren McGavin as the King. It was indeed lavish, a musical that had been put together with tender loving care, with a large orchestra playing the familiar score, and the two principals giving their all in roles that seemed to have been written for them.
