Debra Kaye follows up her first Navona Records release IKARUS AMONG THE STARS with a sequel equally likely to cause a splash: the sagaciously-titled TIME IS THE SEA WE SWIM IN, an eclectic curation of chamber and solo compositions, united chiefly by their boldness and unconventionality.
Just like its predecessor, TIME IS THE SEA WE SWIM IN draws its inspiration from a stunningly diverse array of sources: roller coasters, Zen monks, Greek mythology, Tchaikovsky, and philosophical examinations of liberty. Sometimes, it’s the instrumentation that is unorthodox, such as a Japanese shakuhachi being contrasted with the Western viola and cello. But this is Kaye’s forte: reconciling heterogeneous influences by way of a sonic language that is wholly, uncompromisingly her own.
