Handsome Johnny Desmond carved quite a niche for himself in Glenn Miller's Army Air Forces Band during World War II. While the band was serving in the European Theatre of Operations, Johnny had the American Band of the AEF, as it was called in Europe, all to himself in an AEF radio show entitled 'Sergeant Johnny Desmond Sings'. The lead singer with Glenn Millers Forces Band was Tony Martin, however when Tony left to go to officers school, Johnny Desmond was his successful replacement. Johnny Demond's career as a solo artist got off to a great start on March 16th 1946, when his Victor record, Don't You Remember Me? entered the charts. Over the next eight years he had eighteen records in the hit parade, usually accompanied by Tony Mottola and his Orchestra who followed him from MGM to Coral. Johnny's biggest record success was WOMAN which reached No. 9 in the charts in 1954. His last success was My Own True Love (Tara's Theme from 'Gone With The Wind') in that same year. Johnny was featured in the Chicago radio show 'Breakfast Club' in the fifties , and on TV's 'Your Hit Parade' during 1958-59. He also appeared in the Broadway show 'Say Darling' in 1958. Johnny Desmond died in Los Angeles on September 6th 1985. He was sixty-four years old.
