Marteau's Clarinet Quintet op.13, composed in 1906, is still the the world-famous violin virtuoso's best-known and most popular composition. As per his 'teacher' Mozart, Marteau perfects melodic richness and a smooth flow of harmony through the soft-tone A clarinet and four string instruments. Marteau's String Quartet no.2, op.9 is also included on this CD, and is reminiscent of the 'original father' of the string quartet - Joseph Haydn. The Praetorius Quartet consists of musicians of the Bavarian State Orchestra: David Schultheiss, the first concertmaster of the orchestra, plays violin, and the soloist is the renowned clarinetist Andreas Schablas. The Marteau Quartet, named after the composer, is also comprised of musicians of the Bavarian State Orchestra.
