Gardens have always been a source of inspiration for artists, and have been the subject of many paintings for their beauty, color, light, and atmosphere. While the most well-known painter of gardens is Claude Monet, other greats such as Van Gogh, Pissarro, Matisse, and Sargent all utilized the garden as a meaningful focus of their talents. Works from all of these artists were featured in a major exhibition from The Royal Academy, London called “Painting the Modern Garden.” This film journeys from the gallery to the gardens which inspired the paintings. It explores how twentieth century artists designed and cultivated their private gardens to explore color and form which would translate into their art. “Apart from painting and gardening, I’m no good at anything.” (Claude Monet)
