Orange Mountain Music is proud to announce the availability of pianist Simone Dinnerstein’s new album A CHARACTER OF QUIET featuring music by Philip Glass & Franz Schubert. Known internationally for her concerts and recordings (among others her widely celebrated recording of the Goldberg Variations), Simone Dinnerstein was also the pianist for whom Philip Glass composed his Piano Concerto No.3 in 2017 which was released the following year by OMM on the album CIRCLES – Piano Concertos by Bach and Glass.

An original and agile player, Simone Dinnerstein made a quarantine album that feels contemplative without being morose. When she plays Glass’s Étude No. 6, any clichés about his robotic repetitiveness melt away; her rendition is plainly emotional. The autumnal colors, subtly graduated dynamics, and small breaths in that performance reappear later, as a gratifying echo, in the first movement of the Schubert sonata. The album closes with the drama of the sonata’s allegro section—a reminder that quiet can contain multitudes.

From the first note of this “quiet” and remarkable album (recorded in her New York home with longtime producer and friend Adam Abeshouse), the listener feels as if ferried to a private audience with Dinnerstein. Therein we are greeted with soloistic utterances on a wholly intimate order, sincere and sublime. With this unassuming recording, Dinnertsein seems to have evolved a new kind of homemade listening: she has managed to capture the immediacy and depth of experience – of character – that a one-on-one house recital can deliver. Here we glimpse the personal, as procured by the pandemic.
