The recordings on this two-disc set come from the late 1980s and the great cellist Raphael Wallfisch. It is fitting that Wallfisch has recorded these British cello concertos. International Record Review said of the musician, “no British cellist has done more to advocate British composers than Raphael Wallfisch… [His] playing evinces that attention to detail, tonal finesse and understated conviction which has long made him an exponent of new and unfamiliar music.” The works here are among the best of the 20th century. Composers featured include Gerald Finzi, Sir Arnold Bax, Sir Arthur Bliss, Sir Charles Villiers Stanford, and Ernest John Moeran.
