Not all bravura, actually; but everyone will have sympathy with the man who has to find, today, a new title for a record of violin encore pieces. Well, not all encore pieces, actually, either: the Falla suite arranged from six of the original seven popular songs—splendidly arranged—sees to that.
Kreisler, as is very proper, crops up regularly, always with good effect. If Liebesfreud here goes slightly more convincingly than Liebesleid, for example, this is characteristic of the whole, for Cho Liang Lin displays rather more sympathy for the gayer moments of the programme than its sadder ones. But he also displays entirely regularly a superlative skill and tone, however it may be applied. The Tambourin chinois goes splendidly, so does the Sarasate Tarantella (unless it is that having just listened to a tarantella by Reger I am a sitting duck for one by Sarasate!).
The accompanying is reliable everywhere, the recorded quality and the balance both very good. If this is your programme (and in many ways it is a self-recommending one) there is no need to hesitate.
