Stanley McCartney's long career includes serving as principal clarinet of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, and the Canadian Opera Company. He was in high demand as a chamber music performer and, among many others, has appeared with Glenn Gould, Oscar Shumsky, Leonard Rose, Lynn Harell, Orford String Quartet, St. Lawrence String Quartet, and the Aeolian String Quartet.
