HBDirect began as a mail order company in 1988. By 1993, HBDirect became the first exclusively classical music store on the web. Since then, other music genres have been added. Aside from accepting orders through the HBDirect website and by mail, the company also manages a call center for telephone orders in Franklin, Tennessee.
