Paremski is fittingly flamboyant in the Tchaikovsky; only in the second movement does the quick tempo seem to give short shrift to the music’s poetry. In the Rachmaninoff, she takes a few liberties with tempos, particularly in Variation 6, and the silence preceding the last five bars of Variation 18 is impossibly long, but overall she shows great sympathy for the composer’s idiom, and her virtuosity carries the day.

The sound is quite good, but particularly in the Rachmaninoff the piano is exaggeratedly prominent; in Variation 22, for example, all we hear is piano scales. Then again, the disc is titled Natasha Paremski Plays Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov , and while Gabel and the RPO provide excellent support—for example, they are right with Paremski in the trickiest spots of the Rachmaninoff—this CD is definitely about her. Recommended, then, as a document of a significant young pianistic talent.

FANFARE: Richard A.
