Written for three singers and piano trio, contemporary Scottish composer Julian Wagstaff’s Breathe Freely is a chamber opera in two acts set in 1943 against the backdrop of WWII. At the opera’s heart is a manifold celebration of human endeavor, history, interest, compassion, and, chemistry, in the science sense. Breathe Freely premiered in 2013 to celebrate the tercentenary of the appointment of the first Chair of Chemistry at the Univ. of Edinburgh.
