Bach: a la francaise","description":"\u003cp\u003eJohann Wilhelm Hertel is one of the\n\u003cbr\u003elesser-known composers of the late\n\u003cbr\u003ebaroque and early classical era. Born in\n\u003cbr\u003eEisenach in 1727, as a young man he\n\u003cbr\u003etravelled to the north of Germany with\n\u003cbr\u003ehis father, who was a viola da gamba\n\u003cbr\u003evirtuoso engaged as a Kapellmeister at\n\u003cbr\u003ethe court of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. Already\n\u003cbr\u003eas a young man Johann Wilhelm showed\n\u003cbr\u003ea remarkable talent for music. He\n\u003cbr\u003eexcelled on the harpsichord and violin,\n\u003cbr\u003ebut his father wanted him to additionally\n\u003cbr\u003estudy law. However, a trip to Berlin and\n\u003cbr\u003econtact with Berlin court musicians Carl\n\u003cbr\u003ePhilipp Emanuel Bach and Franz Benda\n\u003cbr\u003epushed the young Johann Wilhelm to\n\u003cbr\u003edevote his life primarily to music. In\n\u003cbr\u003eparticular he studied the harpsichord with\n\u003cbr\u003eCarl Philipp Emanuel Bach, the violin with\n\u003cbr\u003eFranz Benda and composition with Karl\n\u003cbr\u003eHeinrich Graun. He spent his life in the\n\u003cbr\u003eservice of the Mecklenburg-Strelitz and\n\u003cbr\u003e-Schwerin courts, and he was also music\n\u003cbr\u003edirector in Stralsund. It was during this time\n\u003cbr\u003ethat he had many opportunities to meet\n\u003cbr\u003eauthorities from both the musical and\n\u003cbr\u003escientific worlds.\n\u003cbr\u003eHis oboes concertos are exemplary\n\u003cbr\u003ecompositions of these times. The autographs,\n\u003cbr\u003ewhich are preserved in the Library of the\n\u003cbr\u003eRoyal Conservatoire of Brussels (Sig. No. B-Bc5562 and B-Bc-5563), together contain 10\n\u003cbr\u003eoboe concertos in various keys. Nine of them\n\u003cbr\u003eare collected (and numbered by librarians) in\n\u003cbr\u003eSig. No. B-Bc-5562 ,and one is separately\n\u003cbr\u003eplaced as B-Bc-5563. As there is no catalogue\n\u003cbr\u003eof Hertel’s works, the numbers given for the\n\u003cbr\u003econcertos are taken from the manuscript Sig.\n\u003cbr\u003eNo. B-Bc-5562. Some of the pieces are dated\n\u003cbr\u003e1749 (Concertos Nos. 3 and 9) and others\n\u003cbr\u003e1756 (Concerto No.2). All the concertos were\n\u003cbr\u003eprepared for this recording by Katarzyna\n\u003cbr\u003ePilipiuk, copying with a focus on accuracy;\n\u003cbr\u003eonly minor mistakes were corrected so as to\n\u003cbr\u003egive the most faithful transmission of the\n\u003cbr\u003ecomposer’s ideas. The material is very clear,\n\u003cbr\u003ewith all the pieces noted by the composer in\n\u003cbr\u003escore form.
