The\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003eVariations on a Hungarian Song\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003eare a good step in that direction, with a final group that builds the momentum towards a climactic finale. The first piece, the\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003eVariations on a Theme of Schumann\u003c\/em\u003e, finds the young Brahms still in musical mourning for the older composer’s tragic fate, several months after the latter’s hospitalisation, and paying tribute also to Clara Schumann.
